Long Nguyen
Long Nguyen is a journalist from Vietnam. He was born decades after the Vietnam War and grew up witnessing its lasting effects. Before moving to the United States, he spent five years reporting in Vietnam, covering social issues and underrepresented communities.
In Vietnam, Long worked at VnExpress, authoring over 100 analytical pieces on the COVID-19 pandemic and socio-economic struggles of marginalized populations. His reporting highlighted rising inequalities linked to rapid industrialization and environmental degradation, and his international politics coverage helped boost audience engagement.
After earning a master's degree from Georgetown University, Long transitioned to audience-focused journalism, most recently as a social media editor for a newspaper in Washington, D.C. He was among the journalists laid off due to the recent funding cut for the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM).
Looking ahead, he hopes to focus on combating misinformation and fostering deeper engagement with the Vietnamese American community in the U.S., using audience-driven approaches to amplify underrepresented voices.
Long says AFPF matters because it gives journalists the chance to share their stories and experiences, offering perspectives the U.S. and the world urgently need right now.
“Through this fellowship, I not only learned about the U.S. legal system but also drew strength from the fellows and guest speakers I met along the way. Their guidance has given me greater courage to stand firm as a journalist,” he says.
