Clavel Rangel

Clavel has written stories about mining, human rights, climate and land grabs in southern Venezuela where special interests connected to the government have profited at the expense of the people. Clavel is co-founder of a journalism group in Venezuela that focuses on the Amazon region. She currently edits a daily newsletter and writes for a weekly, El Tiempo Latino, which distributes 50,000 copies in Washington, D.C. each Friday. She has won many awards and fellowships since being forced from the country, including those in honor of Gwen Ifill, the renowned public broadcaster, and Chauncey Bailey, a legendary African American editor who was gunned down in Oakland by a crime syndicate that he was investigating in 2007.
