Holding Power Accountable: Interview with Randall Smith

Randall Smith, the president of Alfred Friendly Press Partners, was recently interviewed by Joe Tucker, president of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and a partner with the Friendly program.

They discuss why journalism is essential to holding power accountable and protecting democracy — and how Academy Fellows, through their teaching in the Journalists in Exile Program, are helping exiled reporters stand up to oppression and continue telling the truth on a global stage.

Audio for this episode was recorded in studio at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

The podcast, The Rule of Law: The Academy Speaks, was recorded during our program's June fellowship. IATL is a program partner with Alfred Friendly, and more than 20 of its members participated in the first week’s programming.

Smith discusses the challenges faced by journalists in this time of growing autocracy around the world.
